Organisation: approaching the photography.

I will be taking part in a photography session in my schools drama studio to ensure I get the best quality for my magazine.
Knowing I am doing this i decided to research certain poses by my inspiration for each artist to ensure I step into the photography session with the right mind set and also convey a pop music artist correctly.

This image is my inspiration for what I want my secondary artist will Stevens to be represented as and I aim to recreate this pose in the photography session by keeping the direct mode of address.

As I have previously said Ariana Grande is the inspiration behind Poppy Suede so taking one of her poses will be beneficial to portray Poppy Suede in a pop music genre way.

Drafting and Planning; house style.

After looking back at my first draft I am realising now I need to come up with a different house style that suits my artist. In my original front cover image my artist is seen wearing navy blue, black, white and a maroon colour, I feel using some of these colours may link the front cover together.

For example, the light blue at the top of the cover that says 'free' can be changed into a navy blue colour in order to link back to the artist.

I would also like to change to house style for this double page spread by having the artist photo in natural colours instead of an effect and using the navy blue colour on the P instead so that the magazine will have the same house style throughout.

Drafting And Planning; Band Identity Development.

Knowing that I am creating a main artist I decided to come up with basically a fact file for Poppy Suede, in which it suggests her background, age, likes and dislikes, name of CD, track names and many more. I could not come up with all of the track names however I know I want to have 18 tracks as after researching I have saw this is the amount usually that would be seen on the back of a CD. I also chose to age my artist at age 19 as I am appealing to a teenage target audience and feel this age would link together with this well.

I also created one for my band in which I called 'wildfire' I placed their age of a range between 21 and 25 as I feel this is an appropriate age range for a pop music group.
And I finally created an artist identity for my secondary artist 'will stevens'. I created him to be age 21 as most male pop music artists are from an age of late teens to mid twentys and I feel this age is appropriate. I also suggested he likes guitars as the artist is featured holding a guitar and I feel this represents his personality well.

Orginisation: secondary artist

As I am featuring Finn as my secondary artist on my contents page I had to come up with a name, in which I chose Will Stevens as I feel many male artists just have a basic first and last name as a pop music artist and feel this will be effective for my magazine. I have also chose this image as I want my artist to be represented again as a normal average teen and the use of the guitar prop gives a hint on what type of artist he is.

Organisation: secondary images

I have now decided since I am re creating my contents page I should decide on which images I can use on my contents as secondary images.

Knowing that I need to include a feature on my cover star I have chose this image to feature Poppy Suede, I like this image as i feel it shows the clear personality on Poppy and gives away more of her style then the front cover so it is giving my audience an inside scoop on who poppy is.

I have also decided to feature my band 'wildfire' as I did in my first draft and am sticking with the same image as I feel the style and emotions on their face represents them as a pop music group .

And I am finally deciding to add in another artist who I have not yet came up  with a name for but I feel it will be effective to add in another solo artist other than my main star.

Research into similar products:contents page

After creating my first draft I was not too impressed by my contents page and I feel this was because I had not done enough research into the different types of contents pages featured in magazines.

Here I have found a contents page from Q magazine in which I feel I can use as inspiration for my contents page as it features a few secondary images and I have many secondary images I feel I can use that I have not yet taken advantage of.
I also like the use of the features column and I did do something similar to this in my first draft however it was not as effective or conveyed the same realism as this did.

Drafting and Planning: feedback to first draft

After publishing my first draft on my blog I was given feedback on what I could improve upon.

Front cover:
I was told that my front cover was effective and realistic and that the use of the colour yellow on the front cover really stood out and highlighted key aspects of the front cover, however I was then told to make use of the colours my artist was wearing such as navy blue and maroon in order to link the house style together.

I was then told the name of my magazine may not be as effective as I hoped, hence why I changed the name to SLAY.

Contents;
To improve my contents page I was told to make the text a bit bigger and be aware of colours not showing up as some of the page numbers did not show up on the back ground.

Double page spread:
For my double page spread I was told the writing for my article was too big and was not even on both sides but that the Use of having the P in the background was effective.

Drafting And Planning.

Change of Masthead:
After looking at the first draft i have now realized that the original masthead may not be the most appropriate for my magazine, so i am therefore looking to change this.

I have came up with the word 'SLAY' for my magazine masthead for now although i am still UN sure in whether this name will be my final choice for my magazine as i do not know if it will fit in, however the word 'slay' is often used by young teens who would relate to the pop culture.

The word SLAY often relates to greatly impressing people, or taking control and slaying somebody who is either an enemy or a danger to you. I have chose to use the word SLAY because it is a word commonly used by the teenagers of today in a way that suggests they are doing and being the best they can be. I also have chose this word as i feel it can reflect upon the artists and stories inside the magazine.

DRAFTING AND PLANNING:

FRONT COVER:

when planning out and creating my front cover i came up with two different designs.

in my first draft i have decided to use the first cover presented here, this was because i found the direct mode of address more apealing and the look my model was giving gave a more pop music vibe, however the second image gave a sense of innocence which was what i was originally aiming for my artist to be seen as, but after looking at the both the direct mode of address was just more suitable for the magazine.

However i proceeded to use the secondary image in my contents page as i felt this gave off a better fit instead of being portrayed on the front cover of the magazine.

FIRST DRAFT.

After planning out, organising and drafting the first draft of my magazine front cover, contents page and double page spread, i feel i have successfully completed this draft and have used my target audience to do this.

After reading the feedback from my questionnaire i decided the right way to go with a house style was to use bright and bold colours in which i have chosen my main colours to be bright yellow and blue. For my front cover i used an image that featured my model in direct mode of address as when i was researching into similar products i was inspired by the amount of magazines that did this with their artist. Also on my front cover, i have featured a skyline, to offer something in the magazine, a puff to also offer something to the readers, a mast head, in which i decided was to be STARSINYOUREYES, a main cover line, inspired by a version off billboard magazine, other cover lines to show what else is featured in the magazine and typically a bar code, price and date,

For my contents page i was again inspired by billboard magazine, i used a 'featured' tab on the left hand side of the page that shows all the most interesting stories and other artists in the magazine, i also featured my band in the bottom half of the magazine to show it is not as a significant story as my main artist but is still interesting. i have also included a subscription offer for the readers on the contents page.

My double page spread was inspired by Q magazine, i included an image of my main artist on the left and the artists featured story on the right with a faded out P in the background to gain more significance for my artist.

in saying this, here is my first draft that i feel all my planning has paid off for.

Orginisation: photography and band names

I have taken a few images of a group of my friends that I feel I can use for a band that will be featured on my contents page, however in order to feature these I need to come up with a successful band name for this group.

I have went on to a band generater website and found these names.

Some of these names are good but none of them really scream out a pop music band to be, however looking deeper into the name 'mighty capitol' I have mixed it around a bit and decided to call my band CAPITOL POP.

Coming up with the name for the band was easy once I knew what my band looked like, here are a few images I have taken of my band and may use for my contents page.

Drafting and planning;photoshoot

The Contents page

I have formed together some images of a band and a few images of my friend Finn that I feel I can use as a secondary image on my contents page.

I asked a few of my friends to form a band and gave Finn the prop of a guitar to use as I want him to be represented as a soulful pop music artist and this is how I usually see boy pop music artists represented. I also had my band stage a laugh with one another as pop music bands are usually represented as having fun together.

I experimented using different locations and angles.

Drafting and planning;photoshoot

Front cover;

On Friday the 8th of January a group of friends and I went to the custard factory in Digbeth to take photos using this location with our models for the magazine.

I used my model Scarlett in the clothing I asked her to wear in the specific hair style I asked her to wear for my front cover as my star artist.
