Here I have chosen to analyse a magazine cover that features Lady Gaga. This magazine shows lady gaga very out going and bold, which is sort of what I was going for when choosing my chosen genre and how I could portray it on a magazine cover. I feel this is a good source to look for as it could be something  I'd like to do for my final product, this is because pop music is usually portrayed quite sweet and Lady gaga goes completely out of the box to make everybody remember her and know exactly who she is by standing out and being bold enough for everyone to notice how different she is to the other artists in the pop music genre.

LAYOUT EXPERIMENT:

For today's task we had the opportunity to create different music magazine covers with a variety of codes and conventions based upon the genre of the magazine. All except one of the magazines had already gave us a clue of what the genre is for example the first 'M' magazine was R'n'B/pop as it had an artist named Drake on the cover. However the second magazine was a completely new band and we had to come up with our own chosen genre and name for this band. On the front cover we used things such as a mast head,main cover line and cover lines so it would look a lot like a proffesional magazine.

Here is a masthead from billboard magazine, from looking at this you could say the text is very basic and doesn't stand out, but the use of having three colors varied through the holes in the letters 'b' 'o' 'a' 'd' gives some individuality to the magazine and makes it more recognizable to those who'd read the magazine as it isn't just a blank,bland masthead. This benefits my research as it makes it obvious what would stand out in a masthead and how to make a mast head very individual and different.

Here is a female pop group who I have chosen to look into for further research. This is because I like the way they are portrayed in the image and it fits into my chosen genre. The way they are all placed is similar to a team and almost as if it represents all girls in society, this allows them to be interested in the girls as they are all placed together and are very symbolic of girls in society. This benefits my research as i am looking into producing a pop music group, which is exactly what these girls are and it also gives me some insight on how to produce a front cover image of a group, for example the blocking of the image is very effective and also the way they are portrayed shows a clear representation of a pop music group as they are in trend with today society within their poses and outfits.

For further research I looked into magazines that feature an artist who is similar to what image I'm looking for on my front cover. Both magazine covers I have found feature an artist named Ariana Grande who is a pop music artist. I definitely think these magazines benefit my research as a pop music artist is who I'd want for my magazine cover so seeing these have enabled me to see how I could portray the person modelling for me as a pop music singer. For example Ariana isn't being very bold and completely different, she is seen as quite sweet,innocent and also very on trend with today's society which is what makes her so popular.

Here are 3 more cover photos i have chosen to analyse. This is because i feel they are similar and it is something id like to do for my own. I like how these all have an effect on them which gives a fun element to image. The artists pixie Lott and lea Michelle both have a direct mode of address but i also like the fact that Ariana Grande isn't looking directly at the camera as it gives her quite a holy look with the actual effect.

Here i have researched different magazine covers for pop music. I chose these two as they both have a similar image but both contrast in a different way, this is shown as Adele's image seems quite innocent and calm through the black and white effect and peacefull facial expression on her face. However, Rihanna's is quite edgy and bold shown through the main color which is red as this can connotate danger, this is also made obvious through the parental advisory label. I like both of these as they are both similar styles to what i want to do for my pop music images.

For my further research i have looked into artist/band names for inspiration on my own name. I also chose these two as im also looking into how to place them and how to make them stand out. For example the font and size of the text i feel are very effective as they both stand out. The text for 'Ariana Grande' is quite basic but the fact it is in capitals stands out. The typography for little mix is very individual and stands out to their target audience. The color also stands out as it is a bright color and suggests a bright happy band.

Here is a magazine cover from Vibe magazine which features Janet Jackson. I like this as it also fits into my chosen genre which is Pop Music. This is different to the others i have researched in a minor way as it is more filled with different cover lines, puffs and some pugs. It also has a skyline which i also want to include in my magazine cover, the house style i also feel is effective as i like how the colors compliment Janet Jackson as they are bright and highlight her bright personality.

Here is a magazine cover from Billboard magazine. I have chose to analyse this magazine cover as it also fits into my genre of music that I'd like to also use for my own cover and also because I enjoy how everything is lay out and placed. The use of the house style is something I enjoy to look at as it all ties in together through having the cover line titles in the same shade of purple to the cover star Lady GaGas hair.I feel this is effective as it gives a really effective house style to the magazine. This magazine cover also uses things such as a skyline and Main cover Line which I feel really stand out so it is obvious what the main story is and also know a bit more about the magazine it self and not just focusing on the cover star. I feel this magazine is something to look into as it is similar to what I'd like for my final product.

Here is a magazine cover from billboard magazine. I am uploaded this as it is featuring an artist from my chosen genre Pop music and I feel that it is a good cover to aspire too for my further research and final product. I like this magazine as it uses things such as a symbiotic relationship between Miley Cyrus and the mast head, a house style which all links together( this is something I would like to do in my magazine as it all links in to one another for example to cover line titles are the same colour as the big M) and left third to make the magazine more recognisable to readers. I also researched and chose this magazine cover as it has a direct mode of address from the cover star which I really like and wish to use for my magazine cover.

Preliminary Task.

In today's task i created my very own magazine cover and content page with the image i took of a medium close up for a new school magazine plus i used some codes and conventions saw on a usual magazine cover. I created this using paint.net and edited it on publisher. i used many elements such as a mast head in which i made up and created on my own, cover lines, puffs and pugs and a similar house style for the cover page and content page.

After researching music magazine covers I felt that this one would be the type of magazine cover id like to create. I feel that this is eplicable to my creation as it uses many codes and conventions which make the magazine incredible effective such as using left third which makes the magazine more recognisable,having the cover star take up the whole of the magazine to correctly show who the main story line is based around, having an effective house style which all ties into the cover stars eye makeup which is very effective and having puffs/pugs to offer something more to the readers. I really like this cover and feel it is a good contender into my final magazine cover.

Further magazine cover research

Here I have taken a medium close up which I think will be eligible for my magazine cover. I believe this will be effective as it shows a clear image of a boy in a medium close up. This helped me come up with some photography and layout ideas for my magazine cover.

here i have analysed a content page, magazine cover and double page spread from the billboard magazine and have clearly analysed the codes and conventions of each element. The cover page of billboard magazine has many codes and conventions such as a PUFF to engage the readers by having something to offer in the magazine. The contents page is extremely effective as it has a lot of things to engage the audience such as secondary images which will tell the audience what other things are to be shown in the magazine. The double page spread is also effective as Beyonce takes up an A4 part of the page so shows her significance in the story line.

Here i have analysed a Cover page, contents page and a double page spread of an article by Q magazine. The magazine features big artists in each of these pages to grab attention from a range of different viewers in order to promote their magazine. The content page uses a variety of codes and conventions such as a pug to offer free items in their magazine which will make it more enjoyable for their customers. The content page also uses a great color scheme which fits in with the main theme so it is therefore more recognizable for their chosen target audience. The double page spread is mainly filled with an A4 image of jayZ to gain audience attraction and to promote their story on him.

creative NME task.

In this lesson we got given the task of making a front cover of NME. We used paint.net to create this, we got given the NME logo and the picture of Trent Reznor to successfully create a magazine cover page. I added in a barcode to make it look more official and also used a quote of his. I created a symbiotic relationship by having trents head blocking the masthead which created a more proffesional look. I also added a few more cover lines as through my research it's what I found is more likely to be on a cover.

Drafting and planning investigating typography.

Here is my task that i have completed today. We had got given 6 magazine cover pages with six different texts for the main cover line. We had to rank them in order as to how effective it is to how it fits into the magazine. The text i had ranked at the bottom was D, this was because i felt the text didn't correctly fit into the house style of the magazine as it seemed quite formal and fancy where as the magazine is quite bold. Secondly i ranked C second to the bottom as it seemed really simple and plain and again didn't fit the style of the magazine. The 3rd to the bottom i felt was F. This was because i felt it seemed quite childish for the magazine and still doesn't fit the house style of the image, the writing looks still quite pain and very basic. The text i put in 3rd was the text on A. This is because i felt it was very similar to c and f  so it didn't stand out to me and had the exact same factors so it is still very basic. I placed B in second was B, i felt B looked okay with the house style but i felt it still lacked some individuality and boldness so i therefore put E first. The reason i put E at the top as it is very bold which fits in with the image as it looks extremely bold and stands out.

This has helped me as in my further research and planning i will know exactly what text to use and how it will fit in with my chosen house style. i will also know not to steer to far away from the chosen  theme. 

Research into similar products.

Here i have analysed another contents page taken from vibe magazine. I have analysed the use of the unusually placing of the word 'contents' in being that this could be used to show the magazines individuality in the placing as it not like the usual way to place it. I have also analysed the use of the color as it isn't a color that would stand above the artist so all the focus is around him. The photography in this image is also very effective as the photographer chose for the artist to be in quite a young youth like pose which shows the target audience they are aiming to meet.

Here i have analysed the 'NME' magazine contents page. The color scheme overall is beneficial for the magazine as it all ties in together which makes it more eye catching but also allows other things to stand out such as advertisements. The use of having the photograph whilst capturing a wide angle of people drinking alcohol and basically getting out of hand allows the audience to want to read on instead of just reading about it in the caption and title. Overall the contents page is laid out very neatly and very organised which allows readers to read easily without confusion of where stories are.
